The hedgehog is a wild animal and a protected species. It builds its nest in hollow tree stumps, tightly stacked piles of wood, dense bushes, and heaps of leaves. These habitats are now rare in our region. Our hedgehog dome with an insulated floor can help. It allows for year-round housing, including hibernation. The hedgehog is a welcome animal in a natural garden, as it feeds exclusively on snails, caterpillars, millipedes, and similar insects.
Installation location:
The entrance to the dome should be protected from drafts and direct sunlight (side facing away from the weather). It should also be avoided, if possible, that access leads through lawns which are usually damp at night.

Especially hay, but also dry leaves and straw, as well as crumpled newspaper and wood shavings.

The hedgehog-friendly garden:
- Create winter shelters such as piles of leaves or the Schwegler hedgehog dome.
- Avoid exotic trees or an "English lawn" in your garden.
- Avoid using tightly woven fences that are impenetrable for hedgehogs and thus restrict their habitat.
- Basement shafts, pools, or pits should be covered to prevent them from collapsing.
- Take care when mowing or cleaning up
- Avoid using leaf blowers
- Create small drinking water stations in the garden
