Give bumblebees a home in your garden!

Wild bees and bumblebees pollinate the majority of our fruits and vegetables.

But they too are threatened; intensive agriculture leaves them with little food and nesting sites. The dark earth bumblebee, the most widespread bumblebee in Europe, seeks out its nesting cavities in abandoned mouse nests or mole tunnels, preferably in nutrient-poor meadows where it can also find food.

Unfortunately, such meadows and places are becoming increasingly rare, especially in densely populated Switzerland. But if the number of bumblebee colonies declines, we will not only lose important pollinators in nature, but also fascinating animals with a social structure, such as ants.

When people think of plant pollination, they often picture a honeybee. But tomatoes, for example, can only be pollinated by bumblebees, as they are larger, furrier, and use a special vibration technique. While bumblebees can sting, they rarely use their stinger. If they feel threatened, they try to intimidate their opponent with loud buzzing.

Help protect bumblebees

With a bumblebee nesting box made of wood-concrete from Schwegler, you can offer bumblebees in your garden an ideal nesting aid. Wood-concrete has proven its worth in insect protection and wild bird nesting aids for years, as it is robust, durable, and temperature-regulating.

By purchasing a bumblebee box, you are making a valuable contribution to preserving our biodiversity.

Suitable locations for bumblebee nest boxes:

Gardens, nurseries, orchards, parks: Since most bumblebees look for their nesting cavities near the ground, placing them in elevated positions such as balconies is not recommended.

Time to set up a bumblebee house:

As soon as the coldest winter days are over and the sun shines warmly on the young queens' winter hiding places, they swarm out in search of a nesting site for their colony, which can grow to several hundred bees by summer. Depending on altitude and weather conditions, this can happen as early as the end of February. Therefore, it is recommended to have the nesting aid in place by mid-February. When considering the space required, factor in that the colony will grow and prefers to be somewhat undisturbed. A spot right next to the sandbox or dog kennel is not advisable.

Scope of delivery:

Above-ground bumblebee nesting box, complete delivery: bumblebee nesting box made of wood-concrete with cushioning wool, 10 liters of bedding for approximately one season, and detailed instructions (54 pages in 4 languages: German/English/French/Italian).

What else should I consider when setting up a bumblebee house?

The lid is removable and can be opened at any time. Also, make sure there are suitable forage plants nearby. A detailed list, depending on the season, can be found in the book "The Bumblebee-Friendly Garden" (item number VN006).

If you wish to replace the padding material after a bumblebee summer, we offer the replacement set for bumblebee nest boxes above ground (article number FS00352).
