Chickens and other birds need grit or gizzard stones for digestion, as they don't have teeth to grind their food. The food is ground up in their gizzard with the help of these small stones.

Animals also benefit from extra nutrients if they have been ill, had parasites, or experienced stress from moving or shows. Molting, breeding, raising, and nursing young also increase their need for vitamins and minerals.
