Chicken waterers should always be mounted at a slightly elevated height, for example by hanging them up or placing them on a wooden block, or you can choose a slightly elevated waterer with feet.

The advantage is obvious: the drinking trough stays clean of bedding and dirt, and it is also more comfortable for the animal if it doesn't have to bend down so far for every sip.

Chickens need access to fresh water all day long. Therefore, don't choose a waterer that's too small, and consider how you will ensure a reliable drinking water supply even in sub-zero temperatures during winter. If you have an electrical outlet in your coop, you can, for example, install a waterer heater, a gently heated heating plate, which prevents the water in the drinking trough from freezing completely.
